BOOK-CHAPTER

SIP and VoIP over Wireless Mesh Networks

Abstract

In recent times, the wireless mesh network (WMN) has become a popular choice in Internet connectivity offers, since it allows fast, easy, and inexpensive network deployment. In WMNs, it is important to support high quality multimedia service, such as voice over IP (VoIP), in a fl exible and intelligent manner. The ultimate goal of VoIP is to deliver reliable, high quality voice service comparable to that provided by traditional circuit-switching networks. However, due to the limitation on bandwidth and the defi ciency in control mechanisms, the delivery of VoIP through WMN-accessed Internet often suffers from unpredictable delay/jitter and packet loss. This is because both the Internet and the WMNs were originally designed for data communications.
