BOOK-CHAPTER

The transition from deforestation to reforestation in Europe.

Abstract

During the 19th and 20th centuries, many European countries underwent a 'forest transition' when net national forest cover stopped declining and began to increase. Forest transition in Denmark, Switzerland and France is reviewed. The role of agriculture and agricultural technology in forest transition within the broader context of socioeconomics and political change is discussed. Technological change in agriculture clearly contributed to the transition from net deforestation to net reforestation in the three European Countries.
