On the tail effect of SOVA-based decoding for turbo codes

Abstract

As a suboptimal decoding algorithm for turbo codes, the soft output Viterbi algorithm (SOVA) has the tail effect which degrades its performance seriously. In this paper, we give a detailed description of the tail effect and provide two new block interleavers to mitigate the performance degradation.
