Swarm Intelligence Based Energy Balance Routing for Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract

In this paper we propose a swarm intelligence based energy balance routing scheme SEB. SEB addresses the routing problem, especially focuses on extending the lifetime of wireless sensor networks, in which sensor nodes are battery powered. Based on the assumptions in our model, SEB estimates the weights of sensor nodes dynamically. Furthermore, sensor nodes exchange information (i.e., residual energy and weight) with their one-hop neighbors if necessary. By using swarm intelligence technique, SEB chooses a neighbor node as next hop only considering its local information of neighbor nodes. Consequently, SEB can balance residual energy of sensor nodes evenly according to their weights as much as possible. Compared with the existing algorithm such as GPSR, our simulation results show that SEB is robust and achieves longer network lifetime.
