Well-aligned single crystalline zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowire (NW) arrays have a significant potential as nanostructured, high-surface-area transparent electrodes for photonics and displays applications. Here, we report synthesis of ZnO NWs with wurtzite structure on silicon dioxide using a catalyst-mediated bottom-up growth process in a conventional chemical vapor deposition tube furnace system. X-ray diffraction pattern and photoluminescence of the NW arrays show a c-axis growth direction and a strong ultra-violet band edge transitions.
