Characteristics of an advanced lead-acid spiral wound deep cycle battery

Abstract

Optima Batteries, Inc. is currently in development of two different spiral wound Pb-acid batteries (nominally 50 AH and 15 AH), with projected applications in electric and hybrid electric vehicles. Although electric and hybrid vehicle batteries are often referred to synonymously, they actually have quite unique requirements for battery performance. The requirements of these different applications are compared with reference to the specifications of the batteries currently under development. Battery pack management is an important issue in these applications and several features related to optimum management are discussed.
