Five simple mechanisms to assure a reliable packet combining operation in a two-way link (ARQ) spread-spectrum radio network are outlined. These schemes will either enable a receiver to distinguish a new packet from a retransmitted copy of another packet intended for the same user, or eliminate the need for such a requirement. As examples, performance of both slotted and unslotted DS/SSMA in conjunction with packet combining are presented. Sensitivity of the system performance to the packet header failure rate and the feedback channel error probability are quantified.
