Abstract Raman spectra of single‐crystal Sr(BrO 3 ) 2 · H 2 O were examined at 298 and 356 K from the fully hydrated to the totally anhydrous state. The Raman spectrum of the anhydrous compound, when compared with that of the hydrate, showed significant alterations in both the internal and lattice regions. The changes in the ν 2 –ν 4 region revealed the existence of non‐equivalent BrO 3 − groups in the anhydrous compound. It is inferred from a relative comparison of the Raman and infrared spectra in the lattice region and thermal motion analysis that largeamplitude motions are operative for the BrO 3 − in the anhydrous compound.
