SPIHT coded image transmission over underwater acoustic channel with unequal error protection using HQAM

Abstract

Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees (SPIHT) isan efficient wavelet-based progressive image-compressiontechnique, designed to minimize the mean-squared error(MSE) between the original and decoded imagery. Sinceunderwater acoustic channel suffer from highly significant biterror rates, some mechanism to protect the encoded imagerequired. In this paper we present Reed Solomon channelcoder combined with Hierarchical Quadrature AmplitudeModulation (HQAM) as unequal error protection technique toprotect the transmitted sensitive coded bits. This paper provedthat Reed Solomon channel coding combined with HQAMmethod can reduced sensitive bit error for SPHIT coded imageto transmit over underwater acoustic channel. Proposedscheme is evaluated using different types of images for differentvalues of the modulation parameter and different underwaterchannel physical parameters.
