Wavelet transform for medical image compression

Abstract

MRA (Multiresolution Analysis), with its relationship to subband filtering and the ability to analyse a signal locally, is suited to the compression of discrete signals. Encoding the MRA, using EZW (Embedded Zerotrees of Wavelets) and extensions is generally well established. The application of the technique to medical imaging, specifically mammograms, is examined.
