Motion compensated frame rate conversion of motion pictures

Abstract

Motion pictures have a temporal rate of 24 frames per second, while most of the conventional video displays and recording devices utilize a rate of 60 fields per second. In the case of high-definition television (HDTV) systems, some proposals in the US require a video rate of 60 frames per second. Upconversion of motion picture film to 60 frames per second is important since motion picture constitutes a high-quality source material for HDTV. The authors address the problem of motion-compensated upconversion of 24 frames/s digitized motion pictures to 60 frames/s digital video signals.< >
