Optical fiber amplifiers are rapidly emerging as one of the key components for future optical communication systems. Exciting optical system demonstrations have already been achieved utilizing optical fiber amplifiers. For practical systems a high-power, reliable and wavelength- controlled semiconductor laser source will be required. This paper reviews the progress towards achieving these source requirements at both 980 nm and 1480 nm.© (1991) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
