Abstract Display media for such things as electronic books and electronic paper must be thin, light, resistant to damage, and flexible; and the demand for a flexible, organic EL display is growing. We tried patterning a luminescence layer on a flexible substrate by gravure printing in order to develop a technique of fabricating displays in large quantities and at a low cost, like printed matter. We achieved to form an 80‐nm‐thick layer that exhibited uniform luminescence by optimizing the ink of the luminescent material, and found that the luminescence characteristics were about the same as those of a luminescence layer formed by spin‐coating. Furthermore, the feasibility of making a flexible area‐color organic EL panel by this technique was demonstrated and potential new uses (POPs, luminescent posters, etc.) were discussed.
