Electrodes: Tortuosity Anisotropy in Lithium‐Ion Battery Electrodes (Adv. Energy Mater. 5/2014)

Abstract

A systematic study of lithium ion battery electrode microstructure is carried out using X-ray tomography and numerical diffusion simulations. Fabrication-induced alignment of non-spherical particles is found to cause tortuosity anisotropy, which can have a significant impact battery performance. In article number 1301278, Vanessa Wood and co-workers demonstrate that tortuosity can be easily and accurately predicted based on a simple electron microscopy based assessment of particle shapes and the differential effective medium approximation.
