Rheological Properties of Poly(ethylene glycol)/Poly(acrylamide-co-cellulose) Semi-Interpenetrating Networks Gel

Abstract

For the offshore oil reservoir, a high-strength profile control agent based on cross-linked poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(acrylamide-co-cellulose) gel (CPP) semi-interpenetrated networks (semi-IPNs) was synthesized to improve water absorption profile and enhance oil recovery. The relationship between microstructure and rheological properties of cross-linked network was studied under different experimental conditions, including the composition of gel, salinity solution, and temperatures. The microstructure and rheological properties of CPP semi-IPN gel were characterized by means of FTIR and rheology measurements. In additional, two elastic parameters of CPP semi-IPN gel (yield stress and compliance) were determined by shear stress sweep and creep recovery measurement. With tightness networks, viscosity and elasticity properties of CPP gel increased when solution salinity ranged from 5000 mg/L to 36,000 mg/L. With change in temperature from 55°C to 75°C, viscosity properties of the gel gradually decreased, and elasticity properties first increased and then decreased. The result showed that CPP gel had good heat resistance, salt tolerance, shear resistance, which may be a suitable material applied in the sea reservoir for profile control.
