Abstract IR and Raman spectra of CaNa 2 P 4 O 12 · 5.5H 2 O and SrNa 2 P 4 O 12 · 6H 2 O were recorded and analysed. The bands corresponding to the P 4 O groups and water molecules are assigned. The symmetry of the P 4 O ion is S 4 in CaNa 2 P 4 O 12 · 5.5H 2 O and C 2h in SrNa 2 P 4 O 12 · 6H 2 O. Three crystalloraphically independent water molecules exist in these compounds. Water II and water III form strong hydrogen bonds, in contrast to water I.
