Improvements to a conventional double-ended birefringent fibre-optic sensor system are presented in which a single end of the fibre is used to launch and recover the light signals. This overlooked and unexploited sensor configuration is shown to enhance performance by increasing the sensitivity and depth of modulation while simplifying the optical arrangement when compared to its double-ended counterpart.
