A method for significantly reducing the resonant frequency of a microstrip patch antenna is presented. It is observed that by inserting slits on the patch and on the ground plane simultaneously, the resonant frequency of the antenna can be lowered by a considerable amount. Details of the design procedure and experimental results are given. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
