Abstract

Recent NMR measurements yielded the electric field gradient (EFG) at the nucleus of alkali-metal atoms adsorbed on a W(110) single-crystal surface. This paper compares these experimental results with the results of a model calculation for alkali-metal atoms adsorbed on jellium. The model predicts the correct signs of the measured EFG. The absolute values of the EFG's are in reasonable agreement with measurements. Calculated temperature dependences of the EFG's were found to be rather small.
