Abstract— A simple but novel display architecture is presented which may have far‐reaching implications for the next generation of emissive LCDs. Liquid‐crystal modulators were used to control the amount of activating light falling upon a front‐face photoluminescent phosphor screen, resulting in unlimited viewing angle and efficient production of color. This paper explores the potential for such displays and demonstrates the increased performance obtained by operating a TN device in a photoluminescent LCD architecture.
