Reconfigurable RFID tag antenna for wireless temperature monitoring

Abstract

This paper describes a novel reconfigurable RFID tag antenna for wireless temperature monitoring. A dipole working at 915 MHz with T-match is designed as the tag antenna and a thermal switch is integrated with the dipole to reconfigure its geometry. The status of the thermal switch (ON or OFF) can greatly change the dipole's performance. From the observation of a RFID reader, whether the temperature exceeds specific thresholds can be easily monitored in a remote distance. The low-cost and fully passive temperature sensors can be widely used for supply chain applications and wireless sensor networks.
