60-GHz millimeter-wave life detection system with clutter canceller for remote human vital-signal sensing

Abstract

This paper presents the development of a 60GHz millimeter-wave life detection system (MLDS) by using V-band waveguide components for remote human vital-signal sensing. A clutter canceller is implemented in the system with an adjustable attenuator and phase shifter for the clutter cancellation for the transmitting power leakage from the circulator and background reflection to enhance the detecting sensitivity of weak vital signals. The noncontact vital signal measurements have been conducted on a human subject format a distance of 1 and 2 m. The clearly recorded time-domain and spectrum waveforms of the measured breathing and heartbeat signals are presented. This prototype system will be useful for the development of the 60-GHz CMOS MLDS detector chip design.
