Abstract The copolymerization of n ‐butyl acrylate with both 2 and 4 vinylpyridine was investigated. Spectrophotometric analysis was employed for determining copolymer compositions utilizing the vinylpyridine absorption at 263 mμ. Reactivity ratios for butyl acrylate/2‐vinylpyridine were r 1 = 2.50 ± 0.50 and r 2 = 0.10 ± 0.04. For butyl acrylate/4‐vinylpyridine r 1 = 5.51 ± 0.09 and r 2 = 0.46 ± 0.09. These values were compared with calculated estimates made from the Q–e scheme.
