Abstract

1 INLEIDEND Oat Tacitus se geskiedskrywing behoort tot 'n eiesoortige letterkundige genre wat optimaal aan die hand van liter~re metodes ondersoek kan word, is 'n feit wat toenemend deur klassici as onomstrede aanvaar word. Opmerkings soos die deur Wellesley (1987:450) toon egter dat die navorser wat Tacitus se Annales suiwer liter~r wil benader, steeds sy invalshoek en werkwyse moet verdedig of ten minste duidelik moet omskryf: It must be questioned whether at this date the purely literary critic such as Aubrion can contribute greatly to a better understanding of Tacitus as historian. (Wellesley 1987:450)
