Handover strategies in an integrated satellite/terrestrial mobile radio system

Abstract

A comparative study of handover strategies in an integrated satellite/terrestrial system is presented. Using a Low Earth Orbit constellation for reference, handover events between the terrestrial and space segments are analyzed and techniques to minimise their occurrences are presented. So-called backward and forward handovers are considered for an area served by both terrestrial base stations and satellites.
