Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier Systems with Fiber Bragg Grating Optical Filters

Abstract

EDFA preamplified receivers can achieve sensitivities close to those possible with heterodyne detection while offering a simplified system design. For this sensitivity benefit to be realised, narrow optical bandpass filters are needed to limit the EDFA amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise. This paper presents for the first time an analysis and sensitivity results when a fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) is used as the optical filter. Results are presented on both a 5 Gbit/s optical preamplifier as well as in-line amplifier.
