Field ion microscopy (FIM) and atom probe (AP) investigations of FeNdB and related permanent magnets

Abstract

A field ion microscope combined with an atom probe was used to study the local chemical compositions of rapidly solidified FeNdB magnets. For specimens with compositions Fe74,6Nd15,3B10,1 and Fe77Nd15Al2B6, concentration waves resembling known phases were observed although the measured coercivity was still very low. For a specimen (Fe70Co30)77Nd15B8 there were no phases observed, though fluctuations in the B concentration were found.
