Issues of parallel hybrid nanoscopic/microscopic road traffic simulation

Abstract

The computer simulation of road traffic is an important tool for analysis and control of actual or designed road traffic networks. Today, several types of road traffic simulations depending on their level of detail are commonly used. With increasing detail of the simulation, the time necessary for its execution increases as well. This can be problematic especially for large road traffic networks. In order to utilize a high-detailed simulation and keep the time necessary for its execution in acceptable limits, two approaches can be used. First approach is to utilize a hybrid simulation, which means that various parts of the road traffic network are simulated at different levels of detail. Second approach is to utilize a parallel or distributed execution of the simulation on a parallel or a distributed computer. In this paper, we describe a parallel hybrid nanoscopic/microscopic road traffic simulation, which utilize advantages of both mentioned approaches.
