A novel benzimidazole derivative (2) was synthesized by hydrolyzing 4-[(5-chloro-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)methylene]-2-phenyloxazol-5(4H)-one (1), the azlactone precursor in an acidic medium and treating the product with o-phenylenediamine (OPDA) in situ. The structure of the title compound (2) was established on basis of FT-IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and mass spectral data.
