Abstract Bagasse was pulped by soda‐nitrobenzene liquor with various cooking parameters. High alkali charges and cooking temperatures caused the delignification reaction to proceed very rapidly, particularly during the initial phase which terminated in 15 min. The most advantageous effect of nitrobenzene addition was the stabilisation of the carbohydrate fraction against the peeling off reaction. All nitrobenzene pulps were characterised by increased pulp yield and decreased lignin content. The strength properties of all nitrobenzene pulps were function of temperature. Only at lower temperatures were the nitrobenzene pulps superior to the corresponding soda pulps.
