The improper use of commercial data base management systems (DBMSs) has been a major problem throughout the history of data base management. With the emergence of microcomputers, the selection of the appropriate DBMS for a user' s particular applications environment can be difficult. This column reviews and discusses approaches toward evaluating a DBMS and provides examples that illustrate the application of these approaches to microcomputer DBMSs.
