This paper reviews the technology of using constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. The paper summarizes the functions and values of natural wetlands and discusses the two main constructed wetland types, free water surface systems and subsurface flow systems. The design criteria for each type are reviewed and typical value ranges are given. The River Hebert Marsh in Nova Scotia is discussed as a case study for free water surface wetland systems. The River Hebert Marsh provides wastewater effluent polishing and the discharge from this marsh does not adversely affect the receiving environment, the waters of the Hebert River.
