Finlines with a magnetized lossy ferrite layer are analyzed by the finite-element method with a rectangular edge element which has an interpolation function of a higher order by one than the lowest-order element. First, the validity of this approach is confirmed by comparison with the exact solution in the analysis of a ferrite-loaded rectangular waveguide. Next, the forward and backward propagation constants are computed for finlines with a lossy ferrite layer or with a lossy ferrite and a lossless dielectric layer. The phase constants for lossless problems are also computed and are in excellent agreement with those obtained by the spectral domain method. In this approach, since the final eigenvalue equation has the same configuration as that for the lossless problem, it should be easy to write the code for the analysis on a computer. © 1997 Scripta Technica, Inc.
