Abstract

The hyperpolarizability β of nonlinear optical (NLO) organic molecules was determined by the hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) technique. The β values obtained by using the HRS technique were compared with the values calculated using a semiempirical molecular orbital (MO) method, and good agreement between these values was obtained. The solvent dependence in the HRS measurements was also investigated for NLO organic molecules using p-dioxane and methanol. A specific interaction between the solute and solvent was concluded to influence the β value.
