Abstract

Two new ion‐pair complexes [Ni(phen)3][Ni(mnt)2] (1) and [Ni(bpy)3][Ni(mnt)2] (2) (mnt2−=maleonitriledithiolate) have been synthesized and characterized. X‐ray crystal structure analysis revealed that the compounds consisted of a coordinated nickel cation with distorted octahedral center and a planar [Ni(mnt)2]2−. Due to the different space effects of the cations, compound 1 is crystallized in Pī and 2 in P21/a space groups, respectively, resulting in the different packing of the planar anions. Weak C–H · · · N and C–H · · · S hydrogen bonds between the anion and the phen/bpy planes, and very weak C · · · C interactions, are found. Both 1 and 2 show a reversible one electron redox wave at E 1/2=0.239 V, which indicates that the compounds are excellent precursor for the radical salts of [Ni(mnt)2]−.
