Abstract

Glycyrrhiza glabra L. root (mulhati) yields two saponins named Glabranin-A and Glabranin-B which are glycosides of glycyrrhetic acid. Glabranin A on hydrolysis gave glucose and rhamnose (4:1) whereas glabranin-B gave glucose, xylose, and rhamnose in the molar ratio (4:1:2). On the basis of partial, enzymic, alkaline hydrolysis and methylation studies, partial structures have been assigned to both saponins.
