Laser action from an Er: Yb-doped Oxyfluoride Silicate glass waveguide fabricated using femtosecond laser inscription

Abstract

We demonstrate laser action from a waveguide fabricated in an Er:Yb-doped silicate glass using femtosecond laser inscription. Single-mode waveguides were fabricated exhibiting a total background insertion loss excluding absorption of only 1.2 dB. Textbook threshold characteristics are observed for both 980 nm excitation and dual wavelength excitation.
