Joint carrier and sampling frequency synchronization for OFDM systems

Abstract

In this paper, a robust frequency synchronization scheme is proposed for joint estimation of carrier frequency offset (CFO) and sampling frequency offset (SFO) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. CFO and SFO are simultaneously analyzed in the OFDM system, in which carrier and sampling frequency are generated in a common crystal oscillator. The estimation algorithm is based on phase locked loop (PLL) using one single training symbol. The PLL measures the timing error once a frame in order to track the frequency error to a high degree of accuracy. Extensive simulation is carried out under different channel configurations and the results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is robust and effective in the estimation of CFO and SFO compared with the other algorithms in the literature.
