Abstract Sodium metavanadates in α (α‐NaVO 3 ), β (β‐NaVO 3 ) and hydrated (NaVO 3 · 2H 2 O) forms were studied down to 10 K. All the phases were found to be stable at low temperatures. The hydrated to β transformation above room temperature was found to occur at 305 K. This transition is first order and most likely a one‐step process, rather than a two‐step process as had been suggested previously.
