Engineering resilient cyber-physical systems

Abstract

This panel session paper outlines one of the research thrust areas in the Power System Engineering Research Center's (PSERC) new initiative funded by the US Department of Energy (DOE) to investigate requirements for a systematic transformation of today's electric grid to enable high penetrations of sustainable energy systems. The proposed research under this thrust area looks at the general issue of power grid resiliency. The presentation has three focus areas. First, resiliency with respect to low probably, but high impact events. Second, operational and planning considerations to improve resiliency. Last, consideration of how interactive system control can be used to improve system resiliency.
