Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are grown on electrode deposited SiO 2 /Si substrate with 800 nm free electron laser (FEL) irradiation. The surface of the electrodes and the region between electrodes are treated to be hydrophilic. The SWNTs with 1.69 nm in diameter is enhanced to grow without the FEL and the diameter is distributed to be 25 kinds of chirality with the mixture of semiconducting and metallic properties. However only semiconducting SWNTs with 1.12 nm in diameter grow at the hydrophilic region between electrodes with only five kinds of chirality; (14,0), (13,2), (10,6), and (5,7) by the effect of the surface treatment and the FEL irradiation.
