W 18 O 49 nanotip arrays were prepared by a two-step high-temperature, catalyst-free physical evaporation deposition process in high-purity argon gas. The prepared products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Field emission measurements were carried out with a transparent anode technique, with a CCD camera to record emission site distributions. Findings indicate that W 18 O 49 nanotip arrays have a potential application in field emission and flat panel displays
