Dual Band Microstrip-Fed Antenna with Parasitic Patch for Mobile Applications

Abstract

A dual band micro strip-fed antenna with parasitic patch for mobile applications is presented. FR-4 substrate having thickness of 1.6mm and dielectric constant of 4.4 is used to design the antenna structure. The proposed antenna consists of ground plane with square slot and rotated square parasitic patch at the centre, which is printed on top side of the substrate. 50O micro strip line of width 3.08mm is located at the back side of the substrate which is used to excite the parasitic patch. Two vertical slots are inserted into the parasitic patch to obtain dual band characteristic. The proposed antenna return loss shows that it radiates over 1.73-2.12GHz and 3.28-3.60GHz frequency ranges. The proposed antenna is capable of covering multiple mobile communication bands, DECT, PCS, PHS and WiMAX. Further, an improvement in gain is obtained by inserting a rectangular parasitic patch in the place of rotated square parasitic patch. The proposed antenna has small size with dimensions 40 × 40mm 2 . This antenna has a simple configuration and easy to design. All these properties of the proposed antenna show that it is well suitable for portable communication devices. Optimization of design parameters and simulation is done by using electromagnetic simulation software.
