The goal of present study was to assess Mexican swine trade dynamics and the effect of imports in displacement of domestic production. The dynamics analysis was performed using growth rates and changes in both, volume and value in each sub-sector, of two main tariff fractions: a) live animals and b) meats and edible offal that have a direct impact on domestic output. Both displacement and substitution were calculated through total import value, and their relationship with carcass weight during the analyzed period and live animal percentage equivalent. The present study was carried out from 1990 to 2008. Trade balance at the beginning of the study was -180 thousand tons, equivalent to 1.4 million displaced hogs or 13 % of domestic swine production. In 2008, the trade balance was -581 thousand tons, equivalent to 39 % of domestic swine production.
