Fiberglass Duct And Hanger Supports For Bridge Crossings

Abstract

Fiberglass duct carrying telephone and electric cables on underbridge crossings is being used for either new installations, replacement or repairs to existing bridge crossings. Many duct materials have been used in the past - metal, asbestos cement, PVC. Filament wound epoxy fiberglass duct has been found to be an all-round superior product to these other materials because it is strong, lightweight, non-corrosive, unaffected by temperature extremes and minimum coefficient of thermal expansion. The purpose of this paper will be to show the unique characteristics offered by fiberglass duct for underbridge conduit crossing installations and the benefits to be derived with-out increasing cost. Also, this paper will cover the hanger support structures which hold the duct under the bridge and their use of fiberglass to maintain strength yet be as light as possible.
