Abstract

Perovskite-type ferroelectric ceramics of the Pb(Zn 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 –PbTiO 3 –Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 ternary system have been synthesized by the columbite method. The dielectric and electrostrictive properties of the present ternary system have been investigated from the view point of actuator materials. With increasing Pb(Zn 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 content, the peak value of the dielectric constant decreased; however, the Curie temperature increased. Using suitably selected compositions and sintering process, material has been obtained with Curie temperature near room temperture, dielectric constant above 12000, and transverse strain near -3–-4×10 -4 induced at an applied electric field of 20 kV/cm.
