Abstract

This paper address the phenomenon of poverty in the department of Santander (Colombia) between 2004 and 2010. Based on an integrated poverty approach and using data from SISBEN survey 2010, we estimate three commonly-used poverty indicators for all 87 municipalities of Santander: Poverty Line (PL), Index of Unsatisfied Basic Needs (UBN) and Integrated Poverty Measure (or Kaztman Method). The results show that Santander faces big challenges in their efforts against poverty. Indeed, we observe concerning levels of poverty in the municipalities which are more distant to the capital city and a notorious disparity between rural and urban areas of municipalities.
