Light channeling and localization in defect modes of two-dimensional photonic band-gap structures

Abstract

Summary form only given. We employ the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique to investigate the propagation of light beams through two-dimensional (2D) PBG structures and demonstrate that a defect in a PBG structure provides unique opportunities in light-beam control. FDTD analysis of light propagation in a defect mode of a 2D PBG structure demonstrates that the light field is localized in such a structure within areas with subwavelength sizes.
