Parallel optical interconnects can provide a competitive physical-layer solution for high-performance multi-processor cluster applications. Successful system insertion requires an efficient interface between CMOS electronics and optical components. The authors explore the use of parallel fiber-optics and single-chip CMOS interface solutions to construct broadband network interconnects. The development of a shared medium ring network to support high-performance multimedia applications is discussed.
