On the basis of Mindlin's linear theory, which takes into account the effect of the polarization gradient, the propagation of electromechanically coupled bulk and surface/interface waves was studied in elastic dielectric centrosymmetric media. The investigation was confined to small-amplitude waves, propagating with frequencies far below those of optical waves (quasi-static approximation for the electromagnetic field) in structures, which are idealizations of possible real wave devices. These theoretical investigations predicted various modifications and several novel features of the piezoelectric wave propagation as compared with the corresponding results obtained within the framework of the classical theory.< >
